On the other hand, for vanishingly low intensities our measurements are limited by the intrinsic detection noise. Even though we use state of the art low noise photodetectors, only a poor signal to noise ratio is achievable. Notwithstanding, a way to side step this dilemma is to optically amplify the signal before it is even detected.

Unexpected Noise in Next-Generation Mirror Material – QuantumFrontiers – Leibniz University Hannover
www.quantumfrontiers.de/en/research/research-highlights/details/news/unexpected-noise-in-next-generation-mirror-material

Their sensitivity and stability are limited by thermodynamically induced length fluctuations, or Brownian noise, of high reflectivity mirror coatings. As this fundamental noise is determined by the material s mechanical loss, optical coatings based on crystalline materials with low mechanical loss have been developed.

Spin Noise Spectroscopy of Telecom-Quantum Dots – Institute of Solid State Physics – Leibniz University Hannover
www.fkp.uni-hannover.de/en/research-groups/group-oestreich/research-topics/spin-noise-spectroscopy-of-telecom-quantum-dots

Besides from standard characterization methods such as photoluminescence, we employ the technique of spin noise spectroscopy to investigate the spin dynamics of holes localized in the telecom C band quantum dots. A typical measured spin noise spectrum shows at least two Lorentzian like contributions. Further measurements of the spin noise power and the spin relaxation rate in dependence of the external longitudinal m...
